Veterans'/Remembrance Day
Today is Veterans' Day, and I hope you all set aside five minutes to remember the people who've served their country, including my dad, grandpa, and uncles and Vicki's dad. Did you know it's also
Remembrance Day in the UK? People wear red poppies to remember the soldiers who gave their lives and the money raised from them goes to the Royal British Legion. The poppies come from the poem
In Flanders Fields by John Mcrae. So I post it here to say thank you to all you vets, especially those in my family, and to remember all the men and women who gave their lives. Thank you.

bonfire night et al
so, I don't actually have much to say, but I haven't posted in a bit and I figured you guys want to hear about bonfire night. First we went down to the pub for a couple of drinks while we waited for a friend. He was late, so we were late, which led to all sorts of fun. Like the fact that our group got split in two on the tube and ended up at different stations at Clapham Common. Seriously, it's like the friggin' A train on Halloween. If I wasn't a tourist, it would have totally sucked. However, I am a tourist, so I thought it was tons of fun. We got to see some of the fireworks (big booming low to the ground) and watch people play with sparklers like they were little kids:
Then we fought through crowds of people and wandered on and on and on and on looking for food. Again, I was having fun even if no one else was. Eventually another girl and I found an Italian restaurant that would seat all eight of us and we had pasta and wine and an overall good time. I'd post pics, but they're of work people and I figure I ought to respect their privacy on the internet. If you want 'em, let me know and I'll email them.
Otherwise, the last four days have been pretty status quo. My rambling thoughts for the day are that you can see the
Episode 3 promo online. I think it looks good, but Sean (mention #4) and Tim think it's going to, well, suck. I still have hope. I can't help it. Also, there's an article in today's NYTimes that talks about
the rise in ramen shops in NY that's driving me crazy. Between that and the horrible cravings I've been having for
Pauls for the last week or so, I'm going nuts. That's probably why I ordered myself a pizza on Saturday night.
happy election day
I'm like a celebrity this week. Everyone wants to know who's going to win (I've been saying my money - not my vote - is on Bush, but I'm torn since
the Redskins game), whether I'm going to stay up to watch the results (hell no), and
how the electoral college works. Did you know that in the UK the incumbent prime minister who has lost has to be out of office AND the residence by 10:00 a.m. the day after the election? Totally shocked me. Apparently, it's quite the spectacle. Meanwhile, I've been trying to explain why it's a good thing to give people two months to switch over governments.
In other rambling US vs. UK news, they don't do Halloween here - not the way we do it in NY - but Sean (mention #3) took pity on me and invited me to hang out with his friends. I'm looking forward to bonfire night, which is the same thing as Guy Falkes and takes place this Friday. I'll see if I can get you pictures of that one. Finally, clothes cost the same numerically here, so I'd pay double everytime I bought something. (Yes, Lee, I'm doing better not thinking of it that way, but still...) So I'm going to try
Topshop, which is supposed to be fabulous.
